CUSTOMER DESCRIPTION

Here is my ’71 TLC ready to take you out in the Great Outdoors of Colorado. It has been partially restored by Red Line, having spent untold hours sanding the body before painting it the classic red color, having patched the rear quarter panels with new steel to fix those classic rust holes in the body. I quote from the original Restoration Details: “Our team of professionals will carefully strip down your old paint, examine the metal for rust (none found) and then your FJ40 will be primed and painted with a high quality single stage urethane paint, which will include 3 coats of paint plus a final buffing to bring it to a fabulous looking shine. We paint the original red color on both sides of the hood, bib, fenders, hard top sides, side aprons, and doors. The front grill and hard top will be painted the original white color with a single stage urethane, which will also receive 3 coats of paint and buffing.”

The weather stripping has been replaced to assure you are ‘snug as a bug in a rug’. This is well on its way to another 50 years of life. Twice that time and we are back in 1871, and you can do what I did, exploring the roads and paths of Crystal Park, where I lived in the Caretakers Cabin built in 1952 on Waterfall Loop, just above the site of John Hays Cabin in the Gateway to the Upper Park built in 1883. Hay was private secretary to Lincoln during the Civil War writing parts of his Lincoln biography right there in the summers of1883-1885, when access was via horse drawn buggy on dirt roads with a mechanical turntable switch back. Or visiting the Lost or Hidden Cabin of Alice Hill built in 1886 which Hay purchased shortly thereafter.

The headers are brand new, – you can see their shiny steel in the undercarriage photos. This Land Cruiser can get you there, for example doing the classic loop from Nathrop up Chalk Creek pass Mt Princeton Hot Springs (where I lived in the Estates in founding the Mt Princeton Institute for Advanced Study) to St Elmo (built in 1880 , my Uncle had a cabin there where we stayed during the early 60’s when my father was a pilot in USAF MAC, having on one occasion ferried Pres Kennedy’s car down to Florida during a Missile Crisis in Cuba) then up and over Tincup Pass to Tincup itself, on to Taylor Park Reservoir and back home over Cottonwood Pass down to Buena Vista. Gorgeous off-road trail-beating!

This TLC has been driven with love and devotion. It’s now ready to be taken over by the discriminating owner who can continue its legacy well into the future. The 3.9 liter naturally aspirated, in-line six cylinder engine is original, famous for its durability, reliability and all-around toughness. The wiring harness has been replaced, and various oil lines upgraded, getting the famed Red Line seal of road-readiness.  If you are looking for a restoration project, this 40 is all original and quite functional. Every winter living at 9000 ft off-road in Crystal Park, it started every time I cranked it- it’s a horse, handles like a truck or tractor, floating on those famous leaf springs in the suspension. You can drive her at highway speeds of 55-60 mph and take her over Independence Pass to Aspen for summer festivities.

She’s a beauty, turning heads everywhere I go in her, from the Safeway parking lot in Manitou to the drive up Crystal Park, for 7 miles of paved access to Nature’s boundless beauty above timberline.

She’s ready to go, and if you are so moved, to sustain another $30K in undercarriage and interior restoration (the seats are functional, but could use reupholstering. There’s plenty to do underneath, but nothing that obstructs functionality. The speedo needs hooked up.) We’ve done the exterior, we leave the interior and carriage to you.The J in FJ40 stands for Jeep, and this is one heck of a machine unmatched in mechanical superiority.

Come and see her at Red Line Land Cruisers!

Recent work includes:

  • New rear quarter panels; fresh steel
  • Exterior painted
  • New weatherstrip all around
  • New headers
  • Replaced wiring harness
  • Replaced oil lines and oil sending unit
  • Tune up
  • Tons of tread left on the BFG 31/10.5/r15 all terrain tires

The speedo is currently not working but that could easily be remedied.

History as we know…

This FJ-40 was bought purchased new in Bolder, Colorado. It was used and lived at the Eldora Mines Ski Area.

This rare cruiser had a hand-crafted hard top, which ended up saving the truck form a rusty death.

When we picked it up, it barely ran and was running on 3 cylinders. Nothing worked at that time…no lights, blinkers, the transfer case was blown up, the shifter was broken, the cooling system was in need of repair and the alternator was installed improperly.

Here is what Red Line Land Cruisers did to get this to running / driving status:

  • Fixed the alternator wiring and mounting position
  • Fixed the radiator and cooling system
  • Toyota coil and wires. new plugs
  • Re-timed the dizzy
  • Reset the dizzy for proper ignition timing
  • Adjusted the valves
  • Proper oil change
  • New OEM oil filter
  • Fixed the trans shifter linkages
  • Fixed the steering column pivot assembly
  • Fixed the wiring to get all the lights and blinkers working
  • New rear OEM TOYOTA 1962 tail lights
  • Fabricated reproduction tail light brackets
  • Kioto headlights
  • Full t-case rebuild with proper bearings, seals and new High/low main
shaft bushings with proper oil clearance
  • Changed all oils, rear axle, front axle, trans, and t-case
  • Greased all joints in steering and drive-shafts
  • Fixed Front Selectro lock out hubs with OEM period correct bolts and
    hardware
  • Cleaned out front and rear axle breathers

What is awesome about this cruiser? Glad you asked!

  • Has all the 23mm OEM period correct early style lug nuts
  • Has Original “Green” starter, original dizzy, and all drive-train,
  • “Darth Vader” interior light. OEM period correct.
  • “Big Window” SD-40 1BBL carb; untouched
  • FJ25 vintage cluster; speedo works and oil pressure light
works. Fuel and water do not. All lights work.
  • Engine has good compression due to the fact it starts in 1 second with
out pumping the gas or pulling the choke
  • Trans and t-case are a 2 year only build from the TOYOTA line
  • Last year of the centered rear axle
  • Rare double sided front blinkers

Here is your chance to own one of the rarer FJ40s out there. A classic Colorado beauty ready for a new home!

Miles: 73,000
Location: Vacaville, CA

Customer Description:

SUPER CLEAN 1977 FJ-40 Land Cruiser.  This is a California Smog Legal V-8 conversion that recently passed Smog.  This was initially sold in 1977 in Colorado (I have the Original sticker price + Original Owner’s Manual + Original Service Manual + Original green canvas tool kit bag).  My Dad purchased the vehicle in 1978 and I purchased it from him in 1992. This FJ-40 has not been restored.  However, it has been kept in a garage and is SUPER CLEAN. Every time you drive somewhere you will receive compliments on it.

It has a 5.7L TBI V-8 engine donated from a 1/2 ton 1994 Chevy pick-up. The total mileage on the FJ-40 itself is approximately 55k miles.  The total mileage on the 5.7L V-8 is approximately 73k miles.  I would’ve loved to have kept the stock 6-cylinder, however, California Smog regulations prevented me from doing so.

You can literally drive this vehicle at 70-75 mph comfortably on the freeway to the trailhead. You can get out of the cab, lock in the hubs, engage the Orion transfer case (4:1) and go wheelin’.  Why tow your rig to the trailhead when you can simply drive there?  You can also haul the family around in comfort.

Upgrades:

– 700R4 heavy duty automatic transmission + transmission cooler + Lokar shifter
– Vintage Air Conditioning
– Front + Rear disc brakes
– ARB Air Lockers Front + Rear
– On-Board shower
– Warn 8274 winch
– Custom fabricated front bumper
– Custom fabricated rear bumper + Swing-away spare tire rack + swing-away jerry can / cooler holder
– Rear bench seat from Jeep YJ (I still have the stock rear jump seats as well).  I had the rear bench seat installed in order to transport my kids.  The rear bench seat is child-seat friendly with top-tether anchors and it has LATCH.
– Tuffy center console with Ranger CB + 8′ whip antenna
– Tuffy rear wheel well storage boxes
– Pioneer CD / MP-3 player
– Auto-Meter gauges (fuel + transmission temp + water temp + oil + tachometer)
– Check Engine light mounted on dash
– Tinted windows
– Griffin aluminum radiator
– K&N Air Filter
– Orion 4:1 transfer case + billet shifter knobs
– 34 gallon custom fuel tank
– Weld Mountain Crusher 15″x8″ wheels
– BFG A/Ts (35s)
– The entire tub has been sprayed with Line-X
(and the Tuffy storage boxes as well)

– HID Headlamps
– HID PIAA Fog Lamps
– Refurbished headliner

Overview

This Toyota Land Cruiser FJ-40 is mostly original and in good running condition. The previous owner had it garaged for three years and drove it a handful of times on the weekends throughout the year (he had about 10 other toys in his series of garages and sold this one because he was clearing out for something new). He put brand new BFG tires on it, had the brakes completely redone, and had it tuned.

Prior to that, the previous owner from Denver had it and performed extensive work on the vehicle by mitigating slight rust and applying a very “so-so” paint job where the body work was done. There does not appear to be any rust bubbling up or surfacing from the work that was done. A walk around the vehicle banging on the metal from both sides revealed no weak areas. The previous owner said that all the work done involved replacing it with new metal. I’ve taken a magnet to the vehicle and that appears to be the case. Filler was used after the new metal was installed, and the work done there again, is just so-so.

The previous owner from Colorado Springs said that the original owner put in new metal where there were issues and had a new rear sill put in, as well. Even though the work done was “so-so” it does appear to have kept this FJ40’s body and metal in very good condition, thus making it an excellent candidate for a full restoration. The best part is that it is quite original and includes hard-to-find items such as the owner’s manual, tool roll, original trouble light and more. The old-school roof rack appears to be either hand-made or quite vintage and is probably period-specific to 1971.

Highlights

-79k miles (unsure if these are original or not, but based on the vehicle condition it could possibly be original miles…there’s simply no way to know)
-Clear Colorado title
-Slow and steady and runs strong (but really won’t do more than about 55mph)
-Seats recently recovered
-Old school roof rack
-3 speed manual transmission on the tree
-4WD works perfect
-Brand new BFG M/T Tires (all five)
-Brakes completely redone (shoes, brake master, drums turned, new wheel cylinders)

-Window regulators work perfect; windows crank up and down with ease
-Rear hatch stays work perfect and are in excellent shape
-All doors open and close perfectly; new weatherstrip all around
-Underbody coated in protective coating
-New muffler

Known Issues:

-Left rear corner was dented in a bit (corner metal or full quarter panel replacements available)
-Some minor rust on front fenders (aftermarket fenders available for around $400)
-Blinker has to be held down, but works (needs new switch, which is still available from Toyota)
-Rear heater not hooked up but diverter part included for hooking back up
-Carb needs a bit of an adjustment even though it looks like it was recently rebuilt
-Dome light there but not hooked up
-Needs new speedo cable (part is about $70); speedo cable stopped working about 300 miles ago.
-Top dash pad missing (new one from Toyota still available for around $550)
-Roof rack mounting arms/clips work, but need to be reconfigured or repaired to be trail worthy

SOLD! 1975 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40

Up for sale is this 1975 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40. While it may have that “petina” or “weathered” look to it, this 75′ is in excellent mechanical condition and is more than halfway through the restoration process. The owner was working to restore it when they found a 71′ FJ40 and decided to restore it instead of this 75′.

See 100+ high res pictures below

The FJ was purchased in 2013 after having been in a barn for 15-20 years in Del Norte, Colorado. There was a V8 engine installed, which was removed and replaced with a period-specific 1977 2F Toyota FJ40 engine, t-case, and transmission. The complete engine, t-case and transmission was pulled from project “Dog’s Bollocks” in good running order (it was removed to make way for a V8 conversion, which was installed into Dog’s Bollocks by Red Line Land Cruisers). The engine runs perfect, the transmission shifts smoothly, as does the t-case/4×4.
