Oil Filter, Toyota Land Cruiser F, 2F, 3F-E, 1FZ-FE, Toyota Land Cruiser (EN10)

There are currently two factory Toyota “screw-on” options for Toyota Land Cruisers.
The original Toyota Oil Filter for F-engines (1958 – 03/69) is the large “drop-in” “oil bath” version (Not shown here – see link). However, once Toyota converted to a screw-on oil filter, this filter donned part number 15600-41010. (This one shown is only for display purposes / private collection).This Toyota part number continued from 1970 F-Series engines through the 2F, and 3F-E Land Cruiser engines. It also made its way into the 1FZ-FE model Land Cruiser for a short period of time before moving into the smaller of the three filters without technical explanation.This particular “LARGE” oil filter has been “out of production,” aka not available directly from Toyota, for many years! The “medium size” oil filter (shown in the middle) is the Toyota 90915-20004 and is still available, but how long?

The 90915-YZZB5 has been superseded by 90915-YZZD3, of which has superseded both previous larger filters.

However, the 90915-YZZD3 is said to yield higher oil pressure on start-ups and is in the “Economic Level” price range. Choose in the dropdown menu between these two filters.

It’s crazy to think that Toyota specified a one-size filter for the Land Cruiser from 1970 to April 2016! Then, in May 2016, their specification size changed to the 90915-YZZB5/90915-YZZD3. Maybe we have our facts wrong, and maybe it was a transition from the 15600-41010 to the 90915-40002 and then to the 90915-YZZB5/90915-YZZD3, but you get the point. It’s the same motor, with three filters of different sizes.

Our “take-away” is that if the 90915-YZZD3 is beneficial for start-up pressure, that’s a good thing! However, with that, we will stay on top of oil change intervals if the filter has a smaller screening surface area. To Save, Protect, and Serve the F-Series Land Cruiser engine!

The “-40002” Toyota Oil filter is the replacement, albeit with a shorter overall size.
With that, here at Red Line Land Cruisers, we have had the “-40002” filter in heavy rotation on all of our FJ40 F and 2F engine builds for years! It has the volumetric size, fitment, and quality of the original Toyota “FifteenSixhundred—FourTenTen.”

In a pinch? Do you need to pack a secondary oil filter to fit into a tight space on your Land Cruiser? Think of the 90915-YZZD3 as the baby brother to the 90915-40002 Toyota oil Filter as your emergency backup filter or for long overland trips when you want to change filters in the bush. You can even give the little one away while on the trail and not sweat your prized stash of OG BIG Tall Can Toyota Oil Filters!
