Help your 5VZ-FE–powered Toyota stay cooler and run at its optimal temperature! The Red Line Land Cruisers’ in-house modified OEM Aisin Fan Clutch is set to engage at 95 degrees. We adjust the temp-spring and change the CST Fluid to achieve a long-term solution with a higher “lock-up” rate. This modification is popular because it aligns the fan engagement with the water pump’s rotation dynamics.

We have been running the same modified clutch for 3-years+ in our Toyota’s with a multitude of conditions: hot, dry summer heat, with A/C on, driving on oversized wheels (37″) at low RPM, at high altitudes (9 -10,000ft average) with no issues here in Colorado Springs (6,000+ ft elevation just in town). However, we also “tweak and tune” specifically for higher heat areas like Death Valley and Laredo, Texas.

The 5VZ-FE is a 3.4 L (3,378 cc) version, replacing the 3VZ-E as Toyota’s updated 3.4 L V6 engine from 1995 to 2004. Bore is up to 93.5 mm (3.68 in) while the stroke remains at 82 mm (3.23 in). Output is 190 hp (142 kW; 193 PS) for Tacoma and 183 hp (136 kW; 186 PS) for 4Runner at 4800 rpm with 220 lb⋅ft (298 N⋅m) of torque for Tacoma and 217 lb⋅ft (294 N⋅m) for 4Runner at 3600 rpm. Compression ratio remains at 9.6:1, the same as the 3VZ-FE. It features a DOHC layout with a cast-iron block and an aluminum 24-valve head.

The 5VZ-FE utilizes sequential multi-port fuel injection, features four valves per cylinder with shim-over-bucket tappets, and boasts large cast connecting rods, one-piece cast camshafts, a cast crank (as opposed to the 3VZ-FE’s forged crank), and a cast aluminum intake manifold. This engine also sometimes features an oil cooler (depending on application) and a wasted spark ignition system with three coils. Camshafts are belt-driven. It is a non-interference engine.

Toyota Racing Development (TRD) in North America sold a factory-supported bolt-on supercharger kit for the 5VZ-FE engine, compatible with the 1995–2004 Tacoma, 1996–2002 4Runner, 1997–1998 T100, and 2000–2003 Tundra models. The kit utilizes a Roots-type supercharger, which significantly increases power and torque.
