OIL FILTERS – 1FZ-FE, 3FE, 2F, F Engines, TOYOTA LAND CRUISERS The elusive chase of “FifteenSixHundred-FourTenTen”
Toyota offers three price point levels of factory specified oil filters for our beloved Toyota Land Cruisers. Depending on which level you love your Land Cruiser is the level of filter in which you choose. Yes, we are basically saying all three of these filters are interchangeable with the difference being  price-point based on performance.

The original Toyota Oil Filter for our Land Cruisers; F, 2F, 3F-E, 1FZ-FE, was the 15600-41010 and due to it being “out of production” aka not available directly from Toyota for a few years, the prices are top tier!  The “medium size” Toyota oil filter is the 90915-20004 and is currently still available, but for how long? Both of these filters have been superseded by the 90915-YZZB5, said to yield higher oil pressure on start up and are in the “Economical Level” price range.

It’s crazy to think about the fact that Toyota specified one size filter for the Land Cruiser from the mid-1960’s to April of 2016! Then, the following month of May, 2016 their specification size changed to the 90915-YZZB5. Maybe we have our facts wrong and maybe it was a transition from the 15600-41010 to the 90915-40002 then to the 90915-YZZB5, but you get the point… Same motor, three different filters.

But the real question is WHY?
The simple fact is, they did change and why all the changes?! That answer still alludes us, thus we relish in chase of the elusive “FifteenSixHundred-FourTenTen” as we contemplate the scales of economy? Less material (Weight of half a filter and weight of of one less quart of oil multiplied by how many vehicles shipped across the continent = weight/dollar savings). Or did they find some new engineering insight? Toyota is a very large corporation and nothing is done just because one person said, “hey, we can save money!” on the tale-end of 1FZ-FE 80-Series production cycle, while they were so busy working on the 2UZ! We are sure those “little white lab coats” had to be involved in the corporate decision making processes, they had to sign off and approve such a move!

Maybe you love your Land Cruiser more that what is available from Toyota today. Let’s face it, those factory filters are provided to Toyota by a sub-vendor to suit Toyota’s specified technical specifications, most likely DENSO. We have to admit, yes we do sometimes question Toyota’s specification changes.

“But what do you mean, you are a loyalist and follow Toyota to the letter of the “T!”
What size tires to you have on your Land Cruiser? Not Toyota Spec we bet!
What suspension lift do you have? Not Toyota Spec we bet!
