OIL FILTERS – 1FZ-FE, 3FE, 2F, F Engines, TOYOTA LAND CRUISERS The elusive chase of “FifteenSixHundred-FourTenTen”
Toyota offers our beloved Toyota Land Cruisers three price point levels of factory-specified oil filters. Depending on which level you love, your Land Cruiser is the level of filter in which you choose. Yes, we are saying all three of these filters are interchangeable, with the difference being price points based on performance.

The original Toyota Oil Filter for our Land Cruisers, F, 2F, 3F-E, 1FZ-FE, was the 15600-41010, and due to it being “out of production,” aka not available directly from Toyota for a few years, the prices are top tier!  The “medium size” Toyota oil filter is the 90915-20004 and is still available, but how long? The 90915-YZZB5 has superseded both filters, is said to yield higher oil pressure on start-ups, and is in the “Economic Level” price range.

It’s crazy to think about the fact that Toyota specified a one-size filter for the Land Cruiser from the mid-1960s to April 2016! Then, in May 2016, their specification size changed to the 90915-YZZB5. Maybe we have our facts wrong, and maybe it was a transition from the 15600-41010 to the 90915-40002 and then to the 90915-YZZB5, but you get the point. It’s the same motor, with three different filters.

But the real question is WHY?
The simple fact is, they did change, so why all the changes?! That answer still alludes to us. Thus, we relish chasing the elusive “FifteenSixHundred-FourTenTen” as we contemplate the scales of the economy. Less material (the Weight of half a filter and one less quart of oil multiplied by the number of vehicles shipped across the continent = weight/dollar savings).

Or did they find some new engineering insight? Toyota is an enormous corporation, and nothing is done just because one person said, “Hey, we can save money!” at the tail-end of the 1FZ-FE 80-Series production cycle while they were so busy working on the 2UZ! We are sure those “little white lab coats” had to be involved in the corporate decision-making processes; they had to sign off and approve such a move!

Maybe you love your Land Cruiser more than what is available from Toyota today. Let’s face it: those factory filters are provided to Toyota by a sub-vendor, most likely DENSO, to suit Toyota’s specified technical specifications. We must admit that we sometimes question Toyota’s specification changes.

“But what do you mean, you are a loyalist and follow Toyota to the letter of the “T!”
What size tires do you have on your Land Cruiser? Not Toyota Spec, we bet!
What suspension lift do you have? Not Toyota Spec, we bet!
So about that “following of strict Toyota specifications”…

Toyota previously specified these BIG style oil filters (15600-41010) for our Toyota Land Cruisers and discontinued them, switching specifications for a filter practically half the size as with the 90915-YZZD3! Thus, the 15600-41010 original equipment Toyota filter has attained cut-like status! Do an eBay search for “Toyota 15600-41010” and you will see. Do you buy to use or buy to display in your Toyota shrine?

An Instagram page dedicated to the “FifteenSixHundred-FourTenTen” is called YotaFilters. If you’re in a pinch and need a period-correct 15600-41010 (and the “flea-bay” search yield is zero), visit the YotaFilters website, as he seems to have 15600-41010s in stock!
