Colorado - Home Of The Highest Paved Road In North America

One of Colorado’s most significant claims to fame is its 58 Fourteener Rocky Mountain peaks that rise more than 14,000 feet above sea level. Although Colorado has the most 14,000′+ peaks, Alaska has the highest mountains in North America, with West Virginia having the most number of mountains.

But for those of us who love to drive, Colorado’s Mount Blue Sky Scenic Drive, formerly known as Mount Evans, is home to the highest paved road in North America (and one of the highest in the world). The twisty 22-mile road stretches from the Idaho Springs Visitor Center to the summit of Mount Evans. This byway offers spectacular views and is accessible via a reservation system, though sections can be closed for maintenance or due to weather conditions.

Starting Sept. 3, 2024 through all of 2025, Mount Blue Sky Highway will be closed to motorized and non-motorized travel (foot, bike, etc.). https://www.fs.usda.gov/r02/arp/recreation/mount-blue-sky-recreation-area-scenic-byway
