Overview

This Toyota Land Cruiser FJ-40 is mostly original and in good running condition. The previous owner had it garaged for three years and drove it a handful of times on the weekends throughout the year (he had about 10 other toys in his series of garages and sold this one because he was clearing out for something new). He put brand new BFG tires on it, had the brakes completely redone, and had it tuned.

Prior to that, the previous owner from Denver had it and performed extensive work on the vehicle by mitigating slight rust and applying a very “so-so” paint job where the body work was done. There does not appear to be any rust bubbling up or surfacing from the work that was done. A walk around the vehicle banging on the metal from both sides revealed no weak areas. The previous owner said that all the work done involved replacing it with new metal. I’ve taken a magnet to the vehicle and that appears to be the case. Filler was used after the new metal was installed, and the work done there again, is just so-so.

The previous owner from Colorado Springs said that the original owner put in new metal where there were issues and had a new rear sill put in, as well. Even though the work done was “so-so” it does appear to have kept this FJ40’s body and metal in very good condition, thus making it an excellent candidate for a full restoration. The best part is that it is quite original and includes hard-to-find items such as the owner’s manual, tool roll, original trouble light and more. The old-school roof rack appears to be either hand-made or quite vintage and is probably period-specific to 1971.

Highlights

-79k miles (unsure if these are original or not, but based on the vehicle condition it could possibly be original miles…there’s simply no way to know)
-Clear Colorado title
-Slow and steady and runs strong (but really won’t do more than about 55mph)
-Seats recently recovered
-Old school roof rack
-3 speed manual transmission on the tree
-4WD works perfect
-Brand new BFG M/T Tires (all five)
-Brakes completely redone (shoes, brake master, drums turned, new wheel cylinders)
-Includes original owners manual, trouble light (with rare original trouble light pouch), bottle jack, and tool roll
-New shocks
-All glass in excellent condition; front windshield has no cracks or chips
-Window regulators work perfect; windows crank up and down with ease
-Rear hatch stays work perfect and are in excellent shape
-All doors open and close perfectly; new weatherstrip all around
-Underbody coated in protective coating
-New muffler

Known Issues:

-Left rear corner was dented in a bit (corner metal or full quarter panel replacements available)
-Some minor rust on front fenders (aftermarket fenders available for around $400)
-Blinker has to be held down, but works (needs new switch, which is still available from Toyota)
-Rear heater not hooked up but diverter part included for hooking back up
-Carb needs a bit of an adjustment even though it looks like it was recently rebuilt
-Dome light there but not hooked up
-Needs new speedo cable (part is about $70); speedo cable stopped working about 300 miles ago.
-Top dash pad missing (new one from Toyota still available for around $550)
-Roof rack mounting arms/clips work, but need to be reconfigured or repaired to be trail worthy

KNOWN ISSUES

1-owner FJ60s are hard to come by. This one is in good shape, but like all vintage Land Cruisers, this one has a few issues including:

-A bit of rust

-Dents by the passenger side rocker panel where it appears someone hit a rock on a trail (we’d recommend a simple metal repair and rust repair and then LineX the rockers and 1″ or so around the wheel wells. It would look like this.)

-Dent by rear drivers taillight and a couple small dents on the bumpers (you can still get original replacement bumpers from Toyota)

-Interior carpet needs to be cleaned or possibly replaced. Roughly $1000 to have it done or you can do it yourself for $600 with a full carpet set replacement you can get online

Needs a carb adjustment: runs just fine, but needs to be dialed in. Driven from Albuquerque to Colorado Springs (300 miles) a few weeks ago and ran just fine the whole way.

-Leak coming from the rear main seal. Typical leak…9/10 Cruisers have this leak. $20 part, but most folks wait to do the clutch to replace.

-Small tear in headliner near the back cargo area; headliner could use a cleaning

Here are pics of the dents, minor rust spots, and other issues

SOLD! 1975 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40

Up for sale is this 1975 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40. While it may have that “petina” or “weathered” look to it, this 75′ is in excellent mechanical condition and is more than halfway through the restoration process. The owner was working to restore it when they found a 71′ FJ40 and decided to restore it instead of this 75′.

See 100+ high res pictures below

The FJ was purchased in 2013 after having been in a barn for 15-20 years in Del Norte, Colorado. There was a V8 engine installed, which was removed and replaced with a period-specific 1977 2F Toyota FJ40 engine, t-case, and transmission. The complete engine, t-case and transmission was pulled from project “Dog’s Bollocks” in good running order (it was removed to make way for a V8 conversion, which was installed into Dog’s Bollocks by Red Line Land Cruisers). The engine runs perfect, the transmission shifts smoothly, as does the t-case/4×4.

Here is the list of what has been done on this restoration to date:

  • All fluids changed
  • New aluminum radiator
  • New beltsNew tie rod ends (all 5)
  • New alternator
  • New aftermarket Trollhole carb (original Aisin carb comes with the truck)
  • Desmogged (all smog equipment comes with the truck)
  • New plugs, wires, rotor cap
  • New fuel pump and fuel filter
  • New NOS OEM side marker lights (in rear)
  • New NOS OEM brake /turn / reverse light housing and covers
  • Rear bumper painted black
  • Front drum axle swapped for an axle with disc brakes off a 77′ FJ40
  • Front axle removed and completely rebuilt by Red Line Land Cruisers
  • New brake master cylinder
  • New rotors, pads
  • New greaseable pins
  • New Warn Locking Hub Cap sticker
  • New voltage regulator
  • NOS FJ40 “trouble light” (includes a nice little zippered pouch for keeping it safe
  • Rear drums turned, new wheel cylinders, new drum shoes/springs
  • New shocks
  • Newer set of white rims/wheels in excellent condition – tires mounted and balanced 100 miles ago with new valve stems added
  • NOS OEM steering clam shell (part that covers the steering wheel inside the FJ)
  • 31 x 10.5 x r15 tires with 80% tread life left
  • New dash cap
  • Mint OEM AM Fujitsu Ten Radio located and installed (these are super rare in this condition) and hooked up to the factory speaker in the glove box which is original to the FJ40
  • New radio antenna installed in factory location
  • An OEM Toyota front floor mat was located in good condition (only a couple minor tears, but no holes by the feet) and added
  • An OEM Toyota rear floor mat was located in excellent condition with no tears or holes and added
  • Includes factory rear heater, which works great
  • Wipers, lights, blinkers, hazards, brights, front heater fan, radio, and dome light all work. Currently needs a wiper washer fluid bottle (about $30)
  • Frame cleaned and painted black
  • Brand new muffler installed to OEM specs and location
  • New vacuum hose line
  • Includes a Best Top bikini top
  • Front bucket seats pulled. All framing was cleaned, sanded and painted black. New OEM foam on bottom of driver’s seat added. New upholstery for both front seats.
  • Includes original bottle jack and jack rods, which have been bead blasted, primed, and painted. Comes with extra yellow paint for touch ups.

Here is what stands out about this Cruiser and makes it a good candidate for completing the restoration

  • Everything is factory and original. From the seat belts, to the seats, to the hard top, roll bar, and mats.
  • The parts needed to finish out the restoration can easily be acquired, most parts are available from Toyota
  • The rust is minimal. I know the tub is banged up, but if you take that out of the equation (because most FJ40s need a tub anyway) the floor boards, aprons, hard top sides, hood, doors, and everything else outside of the tub is pretty much rust-free. That’s because it’s a Colorado FJ, as Colorado is an arid climate. The right rear ambulance door bottom does have some typical rust in the bottom and I’d recommend either cutting it out and using one of the steel patches, or locating a better ambulance door.
  • It’s running great. The focus now is on the body and paint and finishing touches.
  • Original paint (including that 70s vintage orange and brown striping)
  • Clear Colorado title
  • VIN @ FJ40199105

The FJ runs great and has been a daily driver the past four weeks. You can enjoy it as-is, or continue on with the restoration. If you wish to continue on with the restoration process, here is the bulk of what it will need:

  • Steering wheel not lined up straight. Easy fix. (I will have this fixed before turning over to the new owner)
  • Front driveshaft not installed (I have one and it will be installed before turning over to the new owner)
  • Speedo was working up until 200 miles ago and then it stopped. Probably just needs a new one ($30)
  • Temp gauge not working (tested several times to make sure it’s not over heating with a temp gun). ($50)
  • Factory jump seats in back are solid but need new foam and upholstery (roughly $400)
  • Tub has moderate rust and is in fair condition. Recommend replacing rear quarter panels and sills or doing a 3/4 Aqualu Aluminum tub replacement. The frame is rust-free. Just the tub has some rust ($4,000 for an Aqualu tub or about $1000-ish for both quarter panels and sill)
  • Replace front fenders ($375 for the pair)
  • Paint job (between $1,000 and $6,000 depending on how you go about it)
  • Decals / badges / front turn signals / hood latches / etc ($300-500 for NOS parts from Toyota)
  • New front windshield ($150)
  • Headliner ($150)
  • It has a few drips from the usual places. Mainly from the rear main seal, which is typical. I usually only replace these when I’m doing the clutch as it’s a $5 part but hundreds in labor.
  • Quick note about the gray spraypaint…the previous owner did a bit of work on the Cruiser before selling it. He mitigated some surafce rust areas and then hit it with that paint. It adds to the weathered look I guess, but thought I’d explain it anyway in case you’re wondering what’s going on there. He was quite liberal with that paint and he didn’t need to be.

Specifics:

Miles: 88,117

Engine: 6 cylinder
Title: Clear
Fuel Type: Gasoline
Interior: Gray
Exterior: Green
VIN #: FJ40277856

Vehicle Description:

I bought this in May 2006 and have put only 3,117 miles on it since. It was garaged year round, and started/turned over regularly. I typically gave it a spin at least once per month, but most usage was in summer months – some off road and some on road. This FJ40 performs great off road, including a nice trek on the Rubicon in Tahoe with no problems. I made some major improvements, including:

• New BF Goodrich 33-10.50R15 tires at 85,110 miles
• New Wheels (Pacer chrome spokes 315C 15×8) at 85,110 miles
• 2 ½” lift suspension at 85,110 miles
• New battery at 85,225 miles
• Oil changes every year
• Intake and exhaust gasket, copper seal gasket, header to collector, push rod cover gasket, sealant, vacuum hose at 85,778 miles
• New tailgate, full size family cage for safety, full size family bikini top at 86,010 miles
• New windshield wipers at 86,200
• New diamond plate to round out both sides of the tailgate, new rear bumper, manifold gasket, water pump, bypass hose, new half doors, belts at 86,546 miles. Tailgate opens flat with locked compartment to store jumper cables, tools, etc.(see photo), and surrounding diamond plate was installed to match tailgate, not to cover up rust
• New Weber carburetor conversion kit; new interstate 85 month battery; installed automatic choke – all at 87,134 miles (pump gas once or twice before starting, and it never fails)
• New front brake pads at 87,804 miles
• Repaired wiring at reverse lamp circuit at 87,867 miles
• I also have the records from previous owner that dates from 7/13/04 (83,565 miles)

I have been storing the doors (2 side doors, 2 ambulance doors) inside in blankets for 7 years since I removed them and installed a full family cage and tailgate. The hardtop was stored in a garage since I removed it (until two years ago), but it has been outside since then. I have all the hardware/bolts, etc. to re-install if desired.

This vehicle will not pass California SMOG without some major modifications to the tune of over $2,000 I am told. I had it registered in an uncongested county, so it was not an issue for me, but to sell it in California, the seller is required to SMOG certify a vehicle. Therefore, this is not for sale in California. Before bidding on this FJ40, verify emissions laws in your state. Some states allow classic/antique vehicles to be excluded from SMOG requirements.

Buyer is responsible for shipping costs for FJ40, hardtop and doors (2 side doors, 2 ambulance doors). However, we will be glad to help arrange shipping with a transport company.
