80-Series Built For Adventure! Toyota Land Cruiser
This 80-Series Land Cruiser is one of our FAVORITES!!! This client came to us a few years ago with issues to be sorted and dreams to accomplish to make this Land Cruiser his ultimate dream adventure machine. From the outside it simply looks like a “plain Jane” 80-Series Land Cruiser with no frills, nothing flashy, nothing blinging and most times it’s as dirty as can be! It gets used! We love the fact that the owner uses this rig and uses it HARD! This time it came in because the owner had ripped the rear sway bar end-links mounts clean out of the frame!
1HDT-FT TURBO DIESEL ENGINE
This Land Cruiser is technically an 1994 US-issued FZJ80 Land Cruiser. But that little “turbo” badge says otherwise. While the chassis and body truly are US-spec 1994 FZJ80 Series. The 1FZ-FE was plucked out to transplant in an 1HDT-FT turbo diesel engine from an EU-spec HDJ80 Land Cruiser, manufactured from July 1995 to July 1999.
The 1HD-FT is an 4.2 Liter (4,164 cc) inline six cylinder 24-valve SOHC turbocharged diesel engine with mechanical direct injection. Bore and stroke is 94 mm × 100 mm (3.70 in × 3.94 in), with a compression ratio of 18.6:1. Known as the “multivalve” it has 4 valves per cylinder (2 inlet, 2 exhaust), central vertically mounted injector, and no glow plugs but rather an intake glow screen heater (like the later electronic 1HD-FTE). The 4 valves per cylinder are actuated by the SOHC, by using bridges so each rocker actuates a pair of valves. Output is 168HP at 3,600 rpm with 280 lb⋅ft of torque at 2,500 rpm.
H151 MANUAL TRANSMISSION
Does your 80-Series Land Cruiser have three pedals? Along with the 1HD-FT diesel engine, the owner opted for the the H151 manual transmission! Buying parts from international sources is one thing.. Making international parts function appropriately is where we come in! And yes, this rig is dirtier than most! No frills, no fancy WeatherTech floor mats although he should have some!
Note the second booster. This booster is for the H151 manual transmission.

FZJ80 SUSPENSION
Aside for allowing for larger wheels and tires, upgraded suspension on the 80-Series just makes it that much more capable in the rugged offroad conditions. It’s why we build 80-Series Land Cruisers to get the family out to the most remote of offroad locations! This 80-Series came in already equipped with the Slinky SLEE Offroad suspension setup, but most importantly this kit tops out at a 3″ lift setup.

RECENT VISIT – SWAY BAR LINKS REPLACED
The most recent upgrade and reason for the the visit, the owner ripped the factory sway bar link mounts clean out of the frame! Thus we did some reconstructive surgery and upgraded from factory links to the Land Cruiser Phil Severe Duty Rear Sway Bar Links.
WHEELS & TIRES
These wheels are the 80-Series “UN Special” steel wheels. These “BEEFY” factory Toyota wheels are wrapped with 315-75/R16 Goodyear Wrangler tires, which is roughly a 34.8″ tall tire. Not too tall and not too short.
SOLAR FOR COFFEE
The owner came back from a previous adventure and said he wants to be able to plug in his electric coffee maker in the middle of nowhere!
We installed the REDARC 2000W Pure Sine Wave Inverter to “make it possible to plug in anywhere and power all your 110V luxuries from home!” With a 2000W inverter in your off-grid setup, you can charge your phones, cameras, laptops and speakers, and run GPS, bi-pap, coffee machines, hairdryers, microwaves, irons and power tools without fear of damaging your appliances.
Renogy 175-watt Flexible Solar Panel to keep things topped off while the ARB Fridge is topped off with “bev-eats.”
SLEE Billet Battery Terminals are used to connect batteries to accessory circuits.

LET THERE BE HEAT!
Wabasto Air Top Diesel Cabin Heater with SmarTemp Control 3.0 utilizes space saving design, quiet operation, high heat output and low fuel consumption. Stay comfortable and warm during any adventure, no matter the climate WITH THE VEHICLE ENGINE OFF!

CONTROL CENTER
This 80-Series Land Cruiser is making use of the DELTA (MCCS) Modular Center Console System.
A-pillar mount dual-sweep gauge to keep that boost creep in check!

80-SERIES NEED FUNCTIONAL PROTECTION!
4X4LABS with the rear swing-out bumper and ARB for the front ‘Roo/Moose/Deer Protection.
LETS CAMP HERE!

STICKY SITUATIONS
Warn winch and Factor55… “nuff said. But we could say, add the C4RS Recovery Gear and be totally sorted!
It’s fun to drive at night… If you can see where you are going. Old school KC Daylighters doing the trick. But this 80-Series owner is rarely driving offroad at night as his mission is to be camped by sundown! And the more remote, the better! An 80-Series Land Cruiser that is mechanically sound is a great vehicle for these type of adventure pursuits! This FJ80 may be a plain-Jane white wrapper, but it’s just a little “spicier” under the bonnet than most!
